Is it Vegan? Organic Lollipops

This is a new segment inspired by Sam, Lunchbox and Dylan (and Hansol, too!)

I was at work and just happily working away when I heard someone call my name.

“Hey, Meggan! Is this vegan?”

I turned around to see who was asking me and assumed it to be the beginning of a joke, like perhaps they were holding up a picture of a dog licking another dogs butt. But there sat a group of my favorites, looking bright eyed and oh-s0-innocent holding up a can of Kern’s nectar or Goldfish pretzels or lollipops or some other random food item.

“Let me see the ingredients,” I replied.

After examining the slightly disturbing list, I paused, deliberating over how exactly to deliver my answer.

“Well…. it is technically vegan, but I still wouldn’t eat it.”

“What? Why? Is it because it’s not organic?”

“Yes… But also mostly because of these 2 words: natural flavors.”

Dude, natural flavors are far from natural. Those 2 words can contain 28 or more different chemicals, compounds and fragrances.

“A natural flavor,” says Terry Acree, a professor of food science at Cornell University, “is a flavor that’s been derived with an out-of-date technology.” Natural flavors and artificial flavors sometimes contain exactly the same chemicals, produced through different methods. Amyl acetate, for example, provides the dominant note of banana flavor. When it is distilled from bananas with a solvent, amyl acetate is a natural flavor. When it is produced by mixing vinegar with amyl alcohol and adding sulfuric acid as a catalyst, amyl acetate is an artificial flavor. Either way it smells and tastes the same….
A natural flavor is not necessarily more healthful or purer than an artificial one. When almond flavor — benzaldehyde — is derived from natural sources, such as peach and apricot pits, it contains traces of hydrogen cyanide, a deadly poison…. Natural and artificial flavors are now manufactured at the same chemical plants, places that few people would associate with Mother Nature.
-Eric Schlosser, in his book Fast Food Nation.

Either way… Eating something that has added flavoring, “natural” or otherwise, indicates you are eating a highly processed food…. Which as a level 10 vegan, I just can’t do.

Super Funking Easy Granola

I dont believe that food should come in a package. If it comes in a package, then its not really food.

Here’s a recipe for some delicious and nutritious vegan gluten free deliciously sexy super yummy for your tummy granola…

Start by making some nut juice, nut milk, whatever you want to call it.

The general ratio is for every 1 cup of nuts you want about 2 cups of water. Blend together with a pinch of pink salt, vanilla extract and agave syrup.

I usually use brazil nuts because they contain no enzyme inhibitors. If you are using other kinds of nuts, soak them for about 6 to 8 hours before using. They are easier to digest and more nutritious that way.

Strain nuts through an amazing nut milk bag. Save the leftover pulp rom the bag to make your granola. If you are not making granola immediately, freeze the pulp.

The granola follows the same ratio as the nut milk. For every 2 cups of dry ingredients you need about 1 cup of wet. Depending on your personal taste preferences and nutritional needs, you can use any combinations of the following:

Dry: 1 cup Rolled oats, 1/2 cup quinoa flakes, nuts, seeds, leftover nut pulp, rice flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp ginger
Wet: 1/2 cup oil (I use coconut), 1/2 cup maple syrup or agave syrup, 1 tsp vanilla extract
(For lower fat granola use hot water instead of oil)

Combine dry and wet ingredients separately, then mix together. Spread on lightly oiled baking sheet. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown, stirring occasionally. When finished baking, add in dried fruits or coconut if desired.
Serve warm with fresh fruit and milk, or let dry in oven overnight before storing in an airtight container.

Vegan Chicken

Did you know that dogs are not carnivores? They are scavengers. They will eat what they find.

Did you know that dogs evolution and humans evolution are closely intertwined? They will eat what we eat, what we leave behind, what we drop.

Did you know that most pet food companies use the lowest grade animal products not fit for human consumption in their products? These remainders have very little nutritional value.

Did you know that in order to supplement the lack of protein and nutrients in pet foods, most companies use vegetable protein sources and synthetic nutrients because they are cheaper? Most pet food protein is vegetable protein.

Did you know that vegan dogs will live longer healthier lives on a vegan diet? The oldest living dog lived to be 28, and was vegan.

Did you know that vegetarian dogs have healthier temperaments than meat eating ones? This is due to the decreased amounts of norepinephrine in the diet which stimulates flight or fight response.

Chicken Marie, vegan all the way. The sweetest cutest and prettiest puppy ever. Be kind to your loved ones, be kind to the earth.

Compassion is Sexy

Did you know?

60 billion animals are used to produce meat and dairy every year.

38% of all grains are fed to animals.

18% of green house gas emissions are from rearing livestock for human consumption- more than transportation.

In other words: a vegetarian driving an SUV is more eco friendly than a carnivore riding a bicycle.

Try being a vegetarian or vegan for one day a week, and help someone else do the same!

Go veggie!!
